Cursed

The first time I met Jennifer L. Armentrout was at Celebrate the Book in October of 2013. It was the second time I had ever been to a bookish event; however, this was the first time I had ever attended a multi-author event.

I was extremely nervous because Jen is one of my all-time favorite authors who I deeply admire. When it was my turn to met Jen during her signing, she immediately asked me if I had ever attended a book event before. I hesitantly answered yes because I assumed I had done something wrong to prompt that question. However, she asked me that because she thought she had seen me before at one of her events. At that point, I was already extremely embarrassed and did not correct how I answered her question.

I got several books signed by her at Celebrate the Book, but Cursed contains my favorite inscription, "So nice to see you again!" Since October of 2013, I have met Jen six times and it is truly a delight to meet her every single time! While her inscription of Cursed was was not true at the time, I absolutely love it! Little did we both know that I would see her numerous times in the years to come. 

All Played Out (Rusk University #3)

When I originally met Cora Carmack at ApollyCon in 2015, I got a bookplate signed by her because I did not own any of her books and had never read any of them. Flash forward a few months later and I owned all of her books and read nearly all of them. In addition, I was absolutely in love with her writing and storytelling.

Later that year, I was able to interview her at San Diego Comic-Con, which you can read here. Having the opportunity to interview Cora was a dream come true! It is always amazing to interact with authors at signings and various events, but interviews are very personal and one-on-one. I vividly remember us sitting outside of a panel room that was in session. People were coming in and out of the room and we had to periodically move or make our presence known so we would not get hit by the door. Following the interview, I asked her to sign my copy of All Played Out, which is my favorite book by her. 

Unfortunately, I have not been able to meet Cora since then and this is the only personalized novel I have of hers. While All Played Out is one of my favorite novels and means a lot to me, having the chance to interview Cora is an opportunity I will be forever thankful for. My interview with her was the second in-person author interview I had ever done and one of my absolute favorites. I still have the audio recording and it makes me smile just thinking about it. All Played Out is so valuable to me because of its content and the memories attached to it.

Truthwitch (Witchlands #1)

I was fortunate enough to be chosen for Susan Dennard's Street Team for her YA Fantasy series, The Witchlands. I have been a part of the Street Team for almost two years and it has been a dream. I have grown closer to Susan and made some amazing friendships along the way.

My signed copy of Truthwitch is one of my favorite signed books, not only because of the sweet inscription Susan wrote, but also the connection I have with the novel. Having promoted Truthwitch and its sequel, Windwitch, I have an attachment to the novels and having the physical versions make me extremely happy. While I did not write either of the novels, I feel an attachment to them because I have spent a large chunk of time promoting and raving about them. I actually have an entire shelf dedicated to both of Susan's series. I cannot wait to see it expand as the series continues and as she writes more novels.

I cannot wait to see Susan sometime in the future and have Windwitch and my other unsigned novels of hers signed. It is always a joy to met Susan and I was extremely saddened when I was unable to go to her Pennsylvania book signing on her Windwitch tour.

The Great Hunt (Eurona #1)

It is always amazing when an author or follower recognizes me outside of the internet. While I have had authors remember me, it is rare for them to remember my name as well. That is not saying that it is bad for an author to not recognize a reader because they have met countless readers, it would be difficult for anyone to remember all those faces. When I met Wendy Higgins in 2015 for the third time, I was shocked when she began personalizing  my book before I had even given her my name. 

I have been in love with Wendy's stories since 2013 and it was a dream come true that she easily recognized me. While my height and hair does distinguish me from most readers, it was shocking that she was able to remember my first and middle name, which I go by on the internet. It was also amazing that she personalized The Great Hunt with Casey Marie because this duology follows a strawberry-blond lead and one of the side characters is a red-head. My hair is what I named my blog and my social media handles after, it was touching that of all the novels she personalized as such was one with a red-head on the cover.

Wendy is such a sweetheart and it has been an amazing few years growing up with her books! I am excited to see what she writes next and I hope to see her soon, too. There are still a couple books in my collection unsigned by her.

Endless Knight (Arcana Chronicles #2)

One of my favorite series is Kresely Cole's The Arcana Chronicles. It is one of the most under-hyped series that I have read. I have met very few readers that have read the series, but those that have read it are as in love and dedicated to the series as I am. 

Endless Knight is my favorite novel from the series and one of my favorite novels of all-time. Having had the opportunity to met Kresley Cole at San Diego Comic-Con in 2014 was one of the highlights of the convention. She is a sweetheart and her YA series deserves more praise. The novels in this series are rather short, which is perfect for marathoning, but she is able to capture emotion, character development, and action into such a short amount of pages. It is truly magical.

I treasure this signed copy of Endless Knight. The book itself is a masterpiece, but the inscription and the memories surrounding it are just as wonderful. I cannot wait for the next novel in the series and to eventually have my entire collection of The Arcana Chronicles signed. If you have taken anything from this post, it is the fact that you should check out the first novel in The Arcana Chronicles, Poison Princess. I promise you will not regret it.

It is hard to truly describe the attachment I have to each of these books. They might seem like an average book to most, but many of you should understand how precious signed and even unsigned books can be. Books are able to capture memories a way that a camera never can. I have several other signed books that I love and treasure, but these are a few of my absolute favorite signed books.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of Silenced from Social Butterfly PR. I knew nothing about Silenced prior to starting it; however, the beginning of the novel completely captured my attention. I fell in love with the characters and their story until half way through the novel. The second half of the novel felt completely different from the first half in an unpleasant way. The characters were completely different and none of their actions were justifiable. It felt as though the author had started one story and halfway through she decided to write a new story with characters that shared very few similarities with the characters from the original novel. 

I could easily rate the first half of Silenced a four point five or higher star rating out of five. The novel captured the development of friendship and the struggles of growing up perfectly. The beginning of Silenced also wove together a beautiful love story and a couple that was one of my absolute favorites. The second half of Silenced completely wrecked my love for the first half. As I stated previously, none of the characters were remotely similar to their characters in the first half. Normally that could be understandable due to development and age, but the growth of the characters was not in a positive direction. Some of the actions they made were despicable and unjustifiable under any circumstances, yet the characters never showed any remorse or reviewed those choices later on. The characters were not meant to be antiheroes, yet the choices they made were disgusting and never apologized for. These were characters who started out as fantastic individuals who I would love to befriend to individuals I would never want to associate with.

The development of new characters and plot lines also lacked. One new character was unnecessarily made out to be a villain even though poor decisions in their past could have been a one time ordeal. While I do not want to name this character or dive into spoilers, the past actions of this character are horrendous and should not be viewed any other way; however, his overall character should have been incorporated into the story another way. I disliked the way the characters were brought into the story and the character was unnecessarily developed into a completely horrible person. While their actions should never be condoned, it was unnecessary to develop them with certain issues. Some people are just horrible, there are not always explanations or 'root' problems that made them the way they are. Also, numerous plot lines in the second half were so clear that it was laughable. They were so easy to discern. 

I felt so betrayed by Silenced. I absolutely loved the first half of the novel. I felt countless emotions for the characters as they grew and developed only to have those characters demolished by the second half of the novel. I thought I had discovered a new favorite author, but I cannot overlook the second half of Silenced. At the moment I have no desire to try another novel by Leddy Harper. 

The beginning of Silenced gave me so much hope that I had found a new favorite novel. I felt so many emotions and such a close connection with the character, but the second half just left me angry and unsatisfied. I wish I could forget the second half existed and just pretend the novel ended there or that the second half was completely cut out except for the last two chapters. 

Silenced received numerous four and five stars on Goodreads, so you might enjoy the novel; however, I would not recommend it. I cannot truly convey how betrayed I feel. I became so attached to these characters only for them to be ripped away and ruined. I considered putting down Silenced and never returning to it, but I had to finish it and I regret not putting it down. The love I had for the beginning of this novel is gone, it is overshadowed by the second half of the novel. I was kind enough to give Silenced a two out of five stars because I still cannot forget that I loved the first half of the novel.

Chapter 14

Bastien’s POV

Bringing Rose on at PPI has proven to be one of my best decisions ever. Not only is she the best assistant I could have hired, I get to have her near me all of the time. Win-win.

But not everyone is happy about Rose’s employment at the firm. Wendy is less than thrilled, but I’m proud of the way Rose handles herself. Kill her with kindness. That’s Rose’s MO where Wendy is concerned, yet she has this clever way of putting the woman in her place.

Rose is sitting on my office sofa. She’s in deep concentration reading the paperwork for PPI’s newest property so she doesn’t notice me looking over to steal glances at her.

That red dress fits her like a glove, showing just the right amount of leg. And those mile-high leopard-print heels . . . hot, hot, hot. I love having her at the office with me, but damn, she makes it hard to concentrate, especially when she’s working in my office instead of hers.

She looks up from the paperwork and opens her mouth to speak but stops when she catches me ogling her. She smiles and her brow wrinkles. “What?”

I shake my head. “I didn’t say anything.”

“I know. Why are you looking at me like that?”

I’m curious to hear how she perceives the way I watch her. “What kind of way am I looking at you?”

Her smile deepens and she glances away. “Never mind.” 

“I want to know. How am I looking at you?”

She glances over at me and then down again. “Like you want something.” 

The woman couldn’t be more right. I do want something. Her. “What do you think I want?”

She tilts her head to the side and grins as she nibbles her bottom lip. That lip I want to suck into my mouth and then bite and kiss at the same time because I can’t decide which I’d rather do. 

“Tell me. What do you think I want?” I’m curious to see how far I can take this conversation. How much I can get her to admit about the way she interprets my gaze. She might be inexperienced, but surely she can see I want her. 

Rose is so different from any other woman I’ve ever wanted. She’s delicate. Fragile. Innocent. She doesn’t know how to play the seduction game, yet she has seduced my heart, body, and soul. 

I need her.

A guy in a black leather jacket set a coffee cup down on the table and sat opposite me.

I looked over at him, feeling slightly awkward since I’d have to tell him he couldn’t sit there. He was handsome, with warm brown eyes and short dark hair, but he wasn’t Fred. “I’m sorry, I’m waiting for someone,” I said. “But I can move.”

To my surprise, he smiled confidently. “Claire, right? I’m Fred.”

I screwed up my face. “You can’t be. Fred has blond hair and blue eyes. I saw his picture.”

He laughed, almost condescendingly. “I don’t use my real picture, Claire. People are crazy.”

What? This made no sense. “I don’t understand. How can you advertise yourself with someone else’s photo? Don’t women get mad when you show up?”

He shrugged, his grin turning a little cocky. “Haven’t had any complaints so far.”

Actually, he was more attractive than the photo he’d used online—more rugged and masculine, with his scruffy jaw, big shoulders, and brawny chest. Meeting the real Fred was kind of like ordering the chicken piccata and being brought the Porterhouse, which hadn’t even been on the menu.

But that wasn’t the point.

(And I’d described someone completely different to Elyse.)

“So, what, you use a fake photo to lure potential clients and then you set up the coffee meeting to check them out first?” I asked indignantly.

“Wouldn’t you?” He shrugged out of his jacket. “It’s a scary world out there.”

I crossed my arms, sitting up tall. “No! That’s a scam. I don’t like scammers.”

“No, it isn’t. I don’t take any money from them. I don’t even talk to them, I just leave.”

Frowning, I said, “That doesn’t seem right to me. These people are willing to pay you to hang out with them and probably feel bad enough about themselves already, and you just walk out without even giving them a chance?”

He shrugged. “Look, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve only walked off a job once, and that was because I thought I recognized the woman. I prefer to keep my personal and professional identities separate. That’s fair, isn’t it?”

Professional identity? He was a rent-a-date! I shook my head in disbelief. “Is your name even Fred?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes,” I snapped. “How am I supposed to know what to call you?”

He grinned as he leaned toward me and lowered his voice. “Call me anything you want. You’re the boss.”

Was he flirting with me or making fun of me? I cleared my throat and pressed my knees tighter together. “I’d like to call you by your actual name, please. Bad enough I have to pay someone to play my fake boyfriend. I’d like something to be real, at least.”

He held his eyes steady on mine for a moment. I felt like he was sizing me up, trying to decide if he could trust me, so I stared right back without blinking. If anyone at this table was trustworthy, it was me.

“Theo,” he said quietly, his eyes dropping to my lips for the merest fraction of a second. “My name is Theo.”

There. Was that so hard? I smiled at him before picking up my latte.“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Theo.”

“What, you’re just going to believe me? You’re much too trusting, Claire. I bet people take advantage of you.”

I set the cup back down on the saucer with an angry clank. “Is your name Theo or not?”

“Shhh, it is, it is,” he said, laughing. Then he glanced over his shoulder like he was in the fucking CIA. “But I don’t give that out to just anyone. You should feel special.”
